The Kin is a new Windows phone from Microsoft designed to broadcast and navigate your social life and is aimed at the Social Generation who want to share their journey (through life) every day with their network of friends.

An analysis of Facebook users determined that Social Connection and Self Expression defined the primary use of social networking sites. Facebook, in particular, handles 5,000,000,000 (that's 5 billion) pieces of content sharing every week and has 3,000,000,000 (that's 3 billion) photos posted every month. This constitutes high volume Life Casting items related to your life.

Users care and are passionate about technology and expect a multi-screen life. They expect things to work on their phone, PC and ultimately on their TV. They want it to work where they are, when they want it to work and how they want it to work.

The Kin (from Kindred Spirits perhaps) plugs one of those gaps - social networking on-the-go and is designed specifically for that purpose, combining the phone, online services and the PC.

Features include touch-based browsing with zoom, pan etc., web search tools, slide-out QWERTY keyboard, Zune software, built-in FM radio

The Kin Studio is your Kin on the web where you can store and backup photos, video contacts and messages in your own private space.

The Kin will be available fromVerizon in the US in May and Vodaphone in Europe in the Autumn. Specific pricing and availability is currently not known.
