Microsoft Max

November 1st, 2005 admin Comments off

Came across a product from Microsoft with the code-name MAX recently.

(Note:

The original link was at http://www.microsoft.com/Max/

However, this product was discontinued on 1st November 2006 ref:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Max

)

Built on the WinFX Runtime Components from Windows Vista allowing it to run on WinXP – is this a trend likely to continue as the Vista component technology filters back to XP?

Microsoft® Codename Max is not like any other product. That’s because it’s not a product—it’s your opportunity to try an exciting new user experience from Microsoft. Max is built on the next-generation WinFX Runtime Components technology that will drive the development of Windows Vista® applications. Today Max lets you make lists of your photos and turn them into beautiful slide shows to share with your family and friends. Tomorrow…who knows?

It provides you with the ability to create albums of pictures/photos that you can share across the internet using p2p – but only with other users who have Max installed…

Ok, so it uses WinFX, but is it a winner?

When compared with Picasa from Google, or a myriad of other picture handling programs, I think not.

The mechanism used for actually sharing the picture lists may be interesting but I was unable to evaluate this process.

Installation is difficult having to install the WinFX Runtime components and messing about with the .Net Frameworks – so I experimented on an empty machine. (Which I would recommend unless you want to risk having to re-install the machine from scratch!!)

I think its worth waiting …
