3DESS, an Engineering Shape Search System, is a research project being undertaken by researchers at Purdue University. The goal is to develop a search mechanism for engineering parts that will retrieve similar 3D models based on their shape.

The aim is to reduce the amount of time taken to find data that is available but is difficult to retreive using traditional approaches, such as searching by model name etc.
A demonstration prototype system, ShapeLab, is available =. This enables a user to select a part that resembles a required part and to retrieve similar items, or they can sketch a part as a starting point.

Similar research work is being undertaken in a number of places including the Princeton Shape Retrieval and Analysis group at Princeton
Autodesk Inc has agreed to buy Alias for $182 million cash.
Interesting quotes/comments picked up off the web …
Alias had sales of $83 million in its last fiscal year ending in June.
Accel-KKR, a private equity firm, is the majority shareholder in Alias, and it is believed that Alias had been working towards an IPO.
Accel-KKR had agreed to fund potential acquisitions and boost research and development spending, support that was missing under its former parent (SGI). But Doug Walker, president of Alias, said Autodesk’s offer was too big to reject, and his company suddenly went from being an acquirer to a target.
Alias StudioTools™ – software for design tasks from 2D sketches to production models – will add industrial design and high-end visualization capabilities to Autodesk’s manufacturing solutions. Autodesk will continue to develop the Alias product lines in conjunction with Autodesk’s complementary products and technologies.
By combining Alias’s conceptual design software with its own mechanical design programs, Autodesk will have technology that covers the entire design process, from the drawing board to the factory floor, said Marc Petit, Autodesk’s vice-president of product development.
Sun and Google have begun a strategic relationship to promote and distribute their trail-blazing technologies …
This appears to mean that Sun will make the Google Toolbar available as an option when downloading the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and in return, I guess, Google will make the JRE and OpenOffice downloads available to their users.
The next announcement expected from google could be details of their rumoured “calendar” application
